PRTG Network Monitoring
Network Monitoring:
Monitoring in networking is essential because it enables the proactive management and maintenance of network systems, ensuring that all components operate efficiently and without interruption. By continuously monitoring network traffic, bandwidth usage, and device health, administrators can quickly identify issues such as bottlenecks, downtime, or unauthorized access. This helps prevent disruptions before they affect business operations. Additionally, network monitoring provides valuable insights into system behavior, aiding in capacity planning and optimization. It also plays a critical role in security, as it allows for the real-time detection of unusual activity or potential security breaches. Ultimately, network monitoring ensures that an organization’s infrastructure remains reliable, secure, and capable of meeting the demands of its users and applications.
PRTG Server:
PRTG is a robust, scalable, and easy-to-use network monitoring solution that enables proactive network management, helping to ensure optimal performance and security while reducing downtime and operational issues.
To setup a PRTG server, you will need to do the following:
SNMP Trap in PRTG:
- Enable SNMP on the Target Device (router, switch, etc.), and set the community string (default is often "public").
- Add SNMP Trap Sensor in PRTG by going to the device, selecting Add Sensor, and choosing SNMP Trap Receiver.
- Configure SNMP Trap on the Target Device to send traps to the PRTG server's IP address on port 162.
